Orange guitar amps began in the late 60’s as founder Cliff Cooper transitioned from the music retail business to custom guitar amplification. Because he had a difficult time stocking his store, he decided to design and sell his own brand of amplifiers, designed by Cliff and produced by Matamp. The rest, as they say, is history.
Noted for their bright orange vinyl coverings and enigmatic front panels (early Orange amps used symbols instead of words to indicate the amp controls), the amps were at one point more popular than UK rival Marshall and were used by such noted artists as Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Page, and John Mayall.
After a brief respite (and an even briefer distribution by Gibson Corporation), Cliff once again “amped” up production of Orange amplifiers in the mid 1990’s and the company has seen a notable resurgence with such popular models as the Thunderverb, Rockerverb, Tiny Teror, and Dual Terror.
